Tragic and Bizarre Art Disaster

This infuriates me. Stéphane Breitwieser is a prodigous art thief, who has admitted to the theft of 172 different works of art from museums all over Europe. He kept the pieces in a collection in his bedroom. But when he was arrested last year, his mother threw the collection away, destroying most of the works. I was also infuriated by the flippant tone of the headline -- I'm thinking of writing them a letter. Have they been bought by Murdoch or something? I don't recall the TImes greeting the destruction of the Bamiyan statues with a headline like "Boom! Big Buddhas Go Bye-Bye!" or "Statues? We Don't Need No Stinking Statues!"

According to a NY Times follow-up piece the neighbors were pretty disinterested in the whole thing. I saw this one posted on Metafilter.
