Road Into Waipi'o

Road Into Waipi'o
A photo through our windshield on the road down into Waipi'o Valley. This road has an average grade of 25%, descending about a thousand feet in a mile's drive, on the edge of a cliff. As you can see the road is used by both vehicles and hikers, and the traffic runs in both directions despite the extreme narrowness of the road (there are pullouts every so often with just enough room for cars to get around each other. You have to have four-wheel drive to get down, and you'd better have plenty of brake fluid, too. Taken on the Big Island of Hawaii on October 5, 2001.
